San Diego Rep Starts New Year With A ‘Boom’

boomSan Diego Rep opens the New Year with a bang – or at least a Boom, a wacked-out bedroom farce with nothing less than the future of humanity hanging on the outcome. Boom plays Jan. 15 (previews begin Jan. 9) through Jan. 31 at the Lyceum Theatre.

Marine biologist Jules is dead sure that a comet is due to hit and destroy the planet any minute. Jules has a plan to repopulate the human race: with the help of craigslist he has lured Jo, a mysterious journalism student, to his subterranean research lab for a hookup that promises “sex to change the world.” But Jo has no intention of playing a doomsday dating game. Besides, Jules is gay.

Boom is both intimate love story and epic myth – feeding fascination about the beginning and the end of life with doses of uproarious comedy. The Washington Post calls Boom “a grand, terribly smart, apocalypse fantasy full of a healthy sense of wonder.” Flipping from pants-around-the-ankles comedy to hipster Twilight Zone science fiction, this is one end-of-the-world story that will leave you grinning from ear to ear.
