InnerMission presents “The Glory Of Living”

InnerMission Productions presents the San Diego premiere of Rebecca Gilman’s The Glory of Living, July 24 – Aug. 14.

The Glory of Living tells the story of Lisa a 15-year-old girl and her marriage to Clint, an ex-con twice her age. Systematically abused by her husband, Lisa is coerced into helping him commit crimes of varying magnitude, including murder. The play bravely examines moral codes, sexual abuse, love, poverty and the value of a human life.

Award-winning playwright Rebecca Gilman has tackled several controversial topics in her plays. “I do like to think of myself as a provocateur,” said Gilman in an interview with Detours magazine. Acknowledging the heavy nature of her chosen topics, Gilman notes that she subscribes to the Mary Poppins ‘spoonful of sugar’ philosophy of incorporating humor to lighten the situations. “I think that a lot of the subjects I explore could make for some pretty relentless drama. I think that audiences simply get worn out if they’re not given room to breathe. The proper amount of laughter can diffuse the tension in a play and allow the audience to get ready for the next idea or conflict.”

The Glory of Living was a finalist for the 2001 Pulitzer Prize. It won an Osborn Award, an After Dark Award, a Jeff Citation, the George Devine Award, and the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright.
