Scripps Ranch Theatre Opens Season With ‘I’m Not Rappaport’

Scripps Ranch Theatre opens its 2009-2010 season with I’m Not Rappaport, playing through Oct. 10.

I’m Not Rappaport introduces audiences to Midge and Nat, two old codgers who meet in the park daily. Midge is an African-American janitor, hiding from his tenants who want him to retire; Nat is a Jewish old time radical, hiding from irrelevance by spinning fantasies and fighting injustice both real and imagined. Their cantankerous relationship is the stuff of pure comic genius.

“We all choose many different ways to confront our mortality, including just giving in and waiting for the inevitable,” says director Robert May. “But that is not how Nat, one of the central characters in I’m Not Rappaport chooses to live. Rather, he decides to confront those around him by being a storyteller, by becoming someone else and reveling in the creative deceit and outrageous stories that live in his still fertile imagination.

“His body may be old but his mind is quite sharp,” May continues. “The treatment and care of the aging, the difficulties dealing with adult children who think they know what’s best for their parents, and the dangers that lurk in urban areas are just a few of the issues raised in this play.”
